Brand history

Thomas Cook先生

On 9 June 1841, the 32-year-old Mr. Thomas Cook travelled by foot from his home in Market Harborough to Leicester to attend a meeting. During this journey, it suddenly occurred to him that railways and locomotives were powerful resources that could be employed for great public benefit.

At the meeting, Thomas suggested that a special train should be engaged to transport all the attendees from Leicester to join a meeting in Loughborough in four weeks. On 5 July 1841, this journey was successfully made by about 500 passengers on a specially-arranged open-carriage train. The trip was considered a huge success, and marked the birth of the Thomas Cook business and travel booking service. To this day 175 years on, modern travellers still enjoy travel packages through a booking service.

In 1872, due to his fascination with Eastern cultures, Mr. Thomas Cook went on a journey across the globe that lasted 222 days exploring many important cities in Asia, with China being one of the highlights of his tour. In the early 20th century, Thomas Cook established its first offices in China with branches in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Beijing. Today, the Thomas Cook group is proud to re-establish its presence in China, ready to share our exciting range of travel and tour packages and guide you through every step of your journey to create the vacation of your dreams.
