Today you will do around 3 hours of hiking on the wall.

This section offers arguably the finest hiking anywhere on the Great Wall. It is extremely photogenic, with over 15 watch-towers, and steep gradients that give constantly changing perspectives and wide open views. There is fascinating variety in the watchtowers here. Some have two storeys, others three. Some have flat roofs, others rounded. This section of the wall is wild, ruined and well preserved.

Today you will do around 5 hours of hiking on the wall.Gubeikou, along with the passes at Shanhaiguan and Juyongguan, was a key strategic target in military campaigns since ancient times. Protecting these three passes was considered vital for keeping Beijing safe from the Mongolian nomads. This is a flat valley further to the west, one of vital importance since it connected the Mongolian Plateau to the north with the vast fertile plains of north China. The vistas of the sinuous Wall snaking its way over the ridges of the Yanshan are breathtaking.

After 2 hours of hiking on the Gubeikou section of the wall, you will go through a path in the fields in order to avoid a military area nearby. 1.5 hours later you will come back to the wall, on the Jinshanling section.

It will take about 5 hours to complete a distance of 10 km (6 miles) from the Jiankou section to the Mutianyu section. You will start at the Jiankou section, wild, weathered and primitive. Photographers and hikers alike love this section, where many iconic image of the Great

Wall have been taken. You will then arrive at the Mutianyu which is restored and tourist-friendly.

Hiking this whole route is like traveling through time from the origins of the wall to the modern era,  offering striking contrasts between wild, half-repaired and fully restored.

After lunch, transfer back to Beijing airport for your return home.
