D1Arrival - Lanzhou

Arrive in Lanzhou by flight – we can also arrange these for you

D2Lanzhou

Enjoy a boat cruise from Liujiaxia Dam to Bingling Temple. Bingling Temple is a series of grottoes filled with a thousand Buddhist sculptures carved into natural caves and caverns in a canyon along the Yellow River. It lies just north of where the Yellow River empties into the Liujiaxia Reservoir.

D3Lanzhou – Zhangye

Today, visit Gansu Provincial Museum, to learn about the history of the Silk Road.  See Zhongshan Bridge, also called the first bridge over the Yellow River. Before Zhongshan Bridge was built, there was no safe passage across the river. Then, go to White Pagoda Park, situated on the White Pagoda Hill, was first built in Yuan Dynasty and rebuilt in Ming Dynasty.

Late afternoon, transfer to the railway station for your high-speed train to Zhangye

D4Zhangye

Visit Giant Buddha Temple and see the Grand Buddha Hall, the Sutra Depository and the Earth Tower.  China's largest reclining Buddha is well preserved in this temple.  Thereafter, see the Bell Tower and Drum Tower, the biggest drum tower in the Hexi Corridor of the Silk Road District.

In the afternoon, tour Zhangye Danxia National Geological Park, known for its colorful rock formations, it is one of the most beautiful landforms in China.

D5Zhangye - Jiayuguan

Enjoy a road trip to Jiayuguan. Along the way, enjoy the beautiful landscape. 

In Jiayuguan, visit the Overhanging Great Wall, built on a steeply sloping valley mouth. When viewed from afar, the wall looks like a magnificent painting hanging over the cliff.

D6Jiayuguan – Dunhuang

Transfer to Dunhuang by road. En-route visit Yulin Caves, a Buddhist grotto that houses some 250 statues and wall paintings, dating from the Tang Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty.

D7Dunhuang

In the morning, visit Yumen Pass. Built in B.C. 111, is the throat pass to North Road in Western Region from Silk Road. Also, marvel at the unique rock formations developed over a period of 700,000 years at Yadan National Geopark. 

After lunch, tour the Crescent Moon Lake and ride a camel across the picturesque Mingsha Sand Dunes. The scenic spot is praised for its co-existence of mountain and spring, sand and water.

D8Dunhuang - Turpan

Today’s highlight is Mogao Grottoes, carved into a cliff, this complex contains some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. The first caves were dug out in 366 as places of Buddhist meditation and worship. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and is a UNESCO Heritage Site.
Late afternoon, transfer to the railway station for your high-speed train to Turpan

D9Turpan

This morning, visit Emin Minaret, an architectural gem of the Silk Road with its circular tower and the Karez Undergound Irrigation, the ancient water system that still works today in the desert.

In the afternoon, visit Jiaohe Ancient City Ruins. With a history of over 2000 years, the city was built on a natural earthen cliff, like an island above two rivers.  The city outline is well preserved, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city reached its cultural peak in the ninth century under the Uygurs, but was largely destroyed by Mongol rebellions.

D10Turpan – Urumqi - Kashgar

Transfer to Urumqi by road.  Stop by the Gaochang Ruins, a ruined, ancient oasis city on the northern rim of the inhospitable Taklamakan Desert. It was a stopping point for merchant traders traveling on the Silk Road.  Enjoy the scenic view of the Flaming Mountains on the way to Urumqi.

In the afternoon, transfer to the airport for your flight to Kashgar - we can also arrange these for you

D11Kashgar

Today, visit Kashgar’s Old Town to catch a glimpse into one of China’s ethnic minorities, the Uyghurs and their Islamic culture, customs and architecture.

We recommend that you are in Kashgar on a Sunday to catch the Sunday Bazaar.  The marketplace is a cacophony of sights and sounds, with the bartering of livestock, from sheeps, goats and horses. It is a sight not to be missed! 

Also visit Abak Hoja Tomb, a grand masterpiece of Uyghur architecture.  The tomb is a 17th century cemetary for Kashgar’s Islamic leader.  End you tour at Id Kah Mosque, the largest Islamic mosque in China.

Full payment is due 14 days prior to departure. Thomas Cook China reserves the right to release all services in case of payment default.

 

Cancellation Policy

If any cancellation is received following a booking, the following general cancellation policy will apply:

  • Between 30 and 21 days prior to arrival : 20% of total amount is due
  • Between 20 and 7 days prior to arrival : 50% of total amount is due
  • Between 6 days and 2 day prior to arrival: 75% of total amount is due
  • 1 day or No-show: 100% of total amount is due
