D1Arrival in Colombo – Negombo – Pinnawala – Sigiriya - Dambulla

Today you will fly into Sri Lanka’s capital city, Colombo. Your private transfer will bring you directly from the airport to the coastal town of Negombo.

After breakfast, you have some free time to explore this idyllic fishing village. Local attractions include St Mary’s Church, the Negombo Lagoon and villages big and small with beautiful coastal views.

In the afternoon, you will head to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. Built in 1975, this orphanage started with only 7 elephants and is one of only two such orphanages in the world. Today, home to dozens of elephants which are homeless, injured, sick or have been separated from their herd, the complex is vast and allows you to watch the bottle feeding of baby elephants, feed fruits to adults and observe these huge creatures up close. Walk to the river nearby where you will be able to watch them bathe and be washed by locals. You can keep observing them whilst you enjoy lunch at a riverside restaurant

Next, travel to Sigiriya, a World Heritage Site. To reach its “palace in the sky”, one must walk through a large entryway and climb hundreds of steps, all carved into a massive rock. While ascending the steps, you will pass the famous frescoes of “The Sigiriya Damsels”. A king’s palace was built on the massive flat top surface of this rock, completed with a pool, gardens and panoramic views of the surrounding rainforest.

Home to over 10,000 species of flowers and plants, it is considered one of the best botanical gardens in the world.
